On April 5th I featured the music of Yiorgos Batis.

Below is a photo of Yiorgos Batis (he is on the left with his students, outside his cafe at the Lemonadika of Karaiskaki (Tzelepi Coast) (Λεμονάδικα του Καραϊσκάκη - Ακτή Τζελέπη), which he named Georges Baté (Ζώρζ Μπατέ) which turned out to serve a a school for Rebetiko music.

Today I featured the music of Stella Haskil (pictured here). I was sad to learn that she only lived to be 36 years old.

I also played some music by the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble from the album Reflections (music by Manos Hadjidakis). We had not heard anything from them from a while. I remember when I began hosting the show and I tried to buy the CD (we have the LP in the WPRB collection) it was very difficult to find. But now there are plenty of them available online.

Sorry, no videos this week, I had to leave right after the show and the rest of the day was very busy. Hopefully I can post something during the week or next week.

Some special shows we had: "Comedy / fun show" with jokes, funny/satirical songs, and the live singing of a song by a couple of friends at the station.

In 1989 or 1990 (after I left Princeton) there was a live interview with singer Ms. Paspala who was visiting NYC at the time.

Memorable Listeners Comments:
On a national holiday (or some other date of historic importance for Greece) I made some comments about the political connotations of a song and received a phone call with further information / clarifications about the politics of the situation I was discussing. I was happy I triggered this reaction.

I hope that Musical Odyssey is sustained.

I was even asked to play Vembo (known for her songs before WWII).

We also heard music from Dionissis Savopoulos album "Long live the Greek song," a TV series that was broadcast from From October 1986 till June 1987. The album was released on December 1987.

Today I spoke about and played music by the great Rebetika singer Giorgos Katsaros. There do not seem to be any YouTube videos of his music so instead I am posting parts 1 & 2 of the BBC Documentary on Rebetika which is hosted by Anthony Quinn. Enjoy.

The new release is “O Gialinos Kosmos (The Glass World)”, a collector’s edition CD featuring ten performances. This meticulous and remastered CD is the authorized release of Nikolaidis’ 1969 LP “O Gialinos Kosmos” (The Glass World)”, a collection of favorite Greek popular (laika) songs by renowned composers such as Kaldaras, Vamvakaris, Hiotis, Papaioannou and others. It was recorded in Toronto, Canada in 1969 and is being relased in its entirety and as intended on CD for the first time.

Regarded as having one of the best voices to ever grace the Greek music scene, Apostolos Nikolaidis is considered one of the great authentic representatives of the Kazantzidis style of “old-school laiko” (contemporary people’s or popular) song, a genre he served consistently and and passionately for more than 35 years. Nikolaidis appeared on the Greek musical scene in 1962. During the 1960s he recorded songs by great Greek composers
such as Manolis Hiotis, Vasilis Tsitsanis, Apostolos Kaldaras and Giorgos Lafkas.

In 1968, while on tour in Canada, Apostolos entered into a collaboration with the great bouzouki virtuoso Harry Lemonopoulos. Their partnership resulted in a celebrated recording achievement: Apostolos’ first long-play (33RPM) album entitled “O Gialinos Kosmos” (1969).

I received a request to hear Manolis Mitsias (there isn't much in this link, I know. If anyone has more info please send it to me) and I thought I would post one of his videos. Below is his classic "Afta ta heria" Great video with dancing too.

I talked about Gus Vali and played some of his music. I only played two songs I play his music pretty frequently.

I had planned on featuring Nikos Gounaris but I ran out of time, we will talk about and hear his music next week.

I don't play enough Vasilis Papakonstantinou but I played the song Kripsou, which is one of my personal favorites.

Today we talked about Lisa Andreas and played her Eurovision entry from 2004. A video of her performance is below.

I recently saw the movie Sicko and was pleasantly surprised to hear Vicky Leandros singing L'Amour Est Bleu for about 20 seconds or so during the film (video of the song below).

During the show, I talked about and played songs by Manolis Aggelopoulos.

We heard *3* versions of Socrates, the originals by Elpidia in Greek and English and the remake (from Euro Revisions) by Evridiki (both videos also below).

We focused a bit on Yiorgos Papasideris and heard some of his folk songs. I wish I had a little more information about him but at least we have the basics.

We heard an old favorite of mine today Savina Yannatou - Lu purtuni. As the person who posted the video said - It is actually 2 traditional Italian songs merged into 1 song "Pinguli Pinguli Giuvacchinu" and "Lu purtuni" A traditional Apulian (southern Italy) along with a nursery thyme from Salento. Lovely song and artist. Watch the video below and enjoy!
